We Are Royale's Painterly Opening Titles for Black Surfing Documentary "Wade in the Water"

"Hang ten" for We Are Royale's opening titles for Wade in the Water: A Journey Into Black Surfing and Aquatic Culture, directed by David Mesfin.

Inspired by the water deity Mami Wata in African mythology, the lushly animated sequence tells a story of ancestral reconnection through surfing. A spiritual awakening emerges from WAR’s painterly vignettes, which combine elements of African folk art and a touch of Basquiat.

Animation Magazine has the scoop on how this gorgeous intro came to life.
